These are two different tendencies when collecting. Often collectors will not want to miss an opportunity and will  go after many works at once or works by the same artist. Their collection will therefore grow very quickly but there is a risk that quality will be overlooked. Buying selectively ensures that the long-term vision and the thematic integrity of the collection is maintained and that each piece enhances the collection as well as its value.
