Media in the Expanded Field. It is the result of an initial round-table discussion held between academics, artists and curators about the uses of technology in contemporary art practices. Having identified and reflected on the consequences of this discussion, and issues arising from it, we have compiled this brief introductory text as a means of reaching out to a wider audience of museum professionals (in both curatorial and conservation departments), art historians and other key individuals in relevant institutions.
The next stage of this project will bring together a wider group of leading voices from both the specialised fields of new media, and the museum world, as well as other interested professionals in order to debate specific issues in more depth, including:
– The nature of ‘medium-specificity’ today
– Curatorial challenges in relation to technology
– Social practices
– Conservation issues
– Implications for collecting strategies
We are planning a programme of residencies, panel discussions and debates over the next year. Please let us know if you would like to participate, if you know of colleagues who may be interested, or if you would simply like to be kept informed of our progress.
